The Dream Journal – May 2021

Hello!

Some years we seem to go straight from winter into summer, but this year it seems more like we’ve been bouncing back and forth between winter and spring! Just when we thought we were done with winter, we got 10” of snow in one storm a little over two weeks ago. But that’s all behind us now. The azaleas have finally blossomed, the fruit trees look like their blossoms will pop any day now, and the peas, lettuce and arugula in the garden have dared to peek above the soil in the last week or so. We’ve planted eight new fruit trees — one peach, one pear, and six apples — to bring us up to a decent orchard of 31 trees. The first round of seedlings (tomatoes, peppers, kale, eggplant, celery, parsley) is doing well, and we’ll start the second round (broccoli, squashes, etc.) this week. We’ve even eaten dinner on the porch a few times! May always raises our spirits, especially after a long winter.

We kick off the merry month of May with a Midweek Song Swap on Wednesday, May 5th. We’re joined by Randy Lewis Brown, who hails from East Texas. Having grown up in both Louisiana and Texas, Randy’s songs are those of hard resignation with the occasional dappled sunlight of wounded optimism shining through. Tune in on our Facebook page or YouTube channel at 7:30pm Eastern time.

The Serendipity Songwriter Sessions continue on Wednesday, May 12th with guest songwriters Rob Siegel from West Newton, MA and Pat Lamanna from Hyde Park, NY. Our theme for this month is “Smoke and Mirrors”. Tune in to see what four different songwriters come up with for that theme, and offer up your own ideas for the June show! Music starts at 7:30pm Eastern on our Facebook page and YouTube channel. And if you’re in the neighborhood of Maynard, MA, stop in at Serendipity Cafe, order up some tasty takeout, and tell Laura and Johnny that we miss them!

Our buddy Thom Wolke is packing up his house here in New Hampshire and going out on the road in a big class A RV that we’ve been helping him get travel-worthy. Before he goes, he’s throwing a Bon Voyage party for himself on Saturday, May 15th, and inviting a few friends to come play, including us. So at 7pm that evening, we’ll be opening for Guy Davis and Joe D’Urso to send Thom off in style. No streaming from this one — live audience only! It’s an outdoor show on Rte. 12A/Main Street in Plainfield, NH, across the street from the town hall and next door to the library. Tickets are $25 in advance, payable via PayPal to thomwolke.mgt@pobox.com before May 12th (or if you’d like to send a check, contact us for the address).

The Midweek Song Swap goes international on Wednesday, May 19th as we swap songs with Kristen Martell from the shores of Nova Scotia. Anyone who has pondered the meaning of it all will find something to relate to in her songs. Join us on Facebook and YouTube at 7:30pm Eastern time.

We’re grateful to have received our Pfizer vaccinations, and have passed two weeks beyond our second shot. The sooner we all get vaccinated and knock this disease down, the sooner we can get back to live local music! We’re looking forward to playing for in-person audiences again, but we want it to be safe for everyone.

The Dream Journal – April 2021

Hello!

Tonight, we heard a few spring peepers from our neighbor’s pond! Such a happy sound! Peepers are a sure sign that spring is truly here. The last tiny little lump of snow next to the garage melted away this past weekend. We have our first few garden seedlings sprouting in the house. Celery, parsley, echinacea, tomatoes, eggplant, and kale have all sprouted already, and the peppers should be popping up any day now. We’ll start the squashes in a couple of weeks. We’ve already planted lettuce seed in the whiskey barrel by our door, in hopes of an early lettuce crop. Days are getting longer, the azalea and lilac buds are swelling, and the trees are starting to look a little red around the edges. Spring!! We’re more than ready for it.

Our first Midweek Song Swap of the month is Wednesday, April 7th, when we welcome Davey O. to share some songs with us. Armed with a steady, rhythmic pulse on his Gibson guitar, a battered straw cowboy hat and a no-apologies rust-belt work ethic, Davey crafts pure Americana that is drawn from the deep well of experience and human emotion. We’ll chat and swap songs on our Facebook page and YouTube channel starting at 7:30pm Eastern time.

The Serendipity Songwriter Showcase is back! On Wednesday, April 14th we welcome guest songwriters Jan Seides from Austin, TX and Chuck Williams from Mattapoisett, MA. The theme for this month’s songwriters is, “My Name Is George”. The show starts at 7:30pm Eastern on Facebook and YouTube. Listen in to hear four new songs inspired by that theme, and offer up ideas for May’s theme. And if you’re in the neighborhood of Maynard, MA, stop in at Serendipity Cafe, order up some tasty takeout, and tell Laura and Johnny that we miss them!

We’re back again the following Wednesday, April 21st, for a Midweek Song Swap with Kim Moberg. A self taught finger pick style acoustic guitarist, Kim’s passionate and heartfelt vocals mesmerize listeners while her compositions tug at feelings of melancholy, heartbreak, and healing. We look forward to sharing songs with her, starting at 7:30pm Eastern time on our Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Now that Covid-19 vaccinations are becoming more and more available across the country and around the world, we strongly suggest you get vaccinated, as we are doing. The sooner we can reach herd immunity, the sooner we can all get out and experience live local music again. Online performances are nice, but we sure do miss being in the same room with live audience members!
